Kitchen Floor Materials Selection

Whether you are renovating or constructing a kitchen, you should decide which materials to use. This time, will take the floor as a focus, what materials usually used for a kitchen floor

Wait a minute, before we even go there, first you have to decide what kind of kitchen that you are having? Is it a full kitchen or just a pantry? Full kitchen usually requires materials that can withstand stains, wet/ damp or even hot substances as cooking activities took place. As for pantry, it requires lighter materials as the activities are limited to eating or just pre-heating the food.

Alright, back to the kitchen floor materials! In general, it can be divided into two types; natural and/ or synthetic materials (refer to factory-made products or made from materials not coming from the nature).

Natural materials will include wood and stones. Recently, people also add bamboo into the category due to its strength and flexibility against pressure. Bamboo is also lighter compared to wood or stones. Natural stones are still favorites, as well as wood due to its variety of color and pattern.

However, these natural materials still need extra treatment to preserve their beauty. Wooden flooring, for instance, is usually covered with polyurethane. This extra layer will close the pores, making it easier to clean. Stones are usually covered with anti-fungi and moss for the same reason.

Synthetic materials will include ceramic tiles, concrete, and vinyl. Ceramic tiles, with huge variety of colors, designs, and size seem to be the most favorite on the list. This is true, moreover because ceramic tiles are also cheap and easy to install and to clean.

Those who prefer a ‘raw’ or ‘industrial’ look may prefer concrete floor. This hard floor is very useful if you are having heavy kitchen machineries (e.g. in a hotel or a big restaurant) due to its high degree of strength.

Vinyl also can be used to cover the floor of your kitchen. However, this material is not too popular as it get torn quite easily by sharp objects (which is a lot or at least common in a kitchen). However, vinyl is still cheaper compared to ceramic tiles or concrete. Vinyl is easy to install, just roll and cut it to size and your floor is covered!

So, choose the best materials for your kitchen floor…!
