Designed by Pencil Office, a Singapore-based studio, this home is built to make a cozy retreat for the owner family in their weekend holiday, while keep it friendly with nature with wonderful sustainable features that integrated with the home. The features are including structural design to passively fulfill the need of the interior environment, and some other cool technology to make it self-sufficient.
The Sentosa Island itself is a well-known area of tourism, being famous for its delicate tropical climate and the spectacular scenery. However, for most of local people, the tropical climate is just too hot to dwell, and it becomes a serious problem of nature when they used too much energy for air conditioner in their home. This is what the designer tried to solve, using a cross ventilation technology which allows maximized natural circulation between the exterior and interior, decreasing the home’s temperature naturally without using any electricity in this modern villa gallery. The large floor-to-ceiling window in several spot of the home is also useful as the entry for natural light, significantly decrease the need of artificial light in it, as well as to provide wonderful scenery to the interior.
The usage of large amount of window also emerges a new problem: privacy. However, it is solved with a simple but beautiful trick by the designer, with using beautifully-crafted wooden shutter which can be closed when needed. Beside this, the home also integrated with solar water heating system, rainwater harvesting technology and many more everything has been carefully designed to make this self-sufficient villa friendly to the environment.
Beside its wonderful sustainable feature, the home has a basic structure of contemporary home, with trapezium facade and bigger portion of upper floor than the lower floor.
